T’Challa is the Star-Lord in What If?. So, what distinguishes T’Challa from Peter Quill?
What if? the second episode finally airs on Disney+ Hotstar on August 18, 2021. The first episode invites you to see what it would be like if Peggy Carter used Super Soldier serum. Well, in this second episode, you can see what happens if T’Challa, the figure we know as Black Panther, becomes Star-Lord.
Like in guardian of the galaxy (2014), the second episode shows Yondu and his men going to Earth in search of Ego’s biological son, Peter Quill. However, Yondu’s men instead kidnap young T’Challa and take him to outer space. As a result of growing up with the Ravagers, adult T’Challa was nicknamed Star-Lord.
So, what makes T’Challa’s version of Star Lord different? What if? with Peter Quill’s version of Star Lord in guardian of the galaxy?
1. T’Challa Has Many Fans
guardian of the galaxy opens with a scene showing Peter going to the planet Morag to retrieve the Power Stone. Having just touched the Power Stone, Peter was immediately blocked by Korath and his troops. As happened in guardian of the galaxy, What if? The second episode also opens with a scene where T’Challa goes to Morag to retrieve the Power Stone and confronts Korath.
Korath did not know Peter at all, in fact they were fighting over each other for the Power Stone. But in What if?, Korath immediately recognized T’Challa, claimed to be his fan, even willing to be defeated by T’Challa. From this it can be concluded that T’Challa has a better reputation than Peter, even to the point of being respected by the enemy.
It wasn’t just Korath who seemed to be infatuated with T’Challa. While T’Challa was chilling with the Ravagers at a bar, Drax, who was the bartender, recognized him immediately and asked for a photo. Compared to Peter, T’Challa seems to be much more popular and has many fans in space.
2. T’Challa is more loved by Yondu
good in guardian of the galaxy neither is it What if?, Yondu treats Peter and T’Challa like his children. Even so, there are still differences in Yondu’s attitude towards Peter and T’Challa. If you flashback to two movies guardian of the galaxy, Yondu was quite strict with Peter although in the end Yondu confessed that he loved Peter before his death.
On the other hand, T’Challa received much more lenient treatment than Yondu. While in Morag, Yondu does not appear at all when Peter is being chased by Korath. But when T’Challa pressed against Morag, Yondu came to help.
In addition to What if?, Yondu had turned down the job from Nebula because he didn’t want to face the Collector. However, due to T’Challa’s persuasion, Yondu finally agrees to accept Nebula’s offer. Yondu even admitted that he always had trouble refusing T’Challa’s requests. From this it can be concluded that Yondu clearly loves T’Challa more than Peter.
3. T’Challa has principles like Robin Hood
Peter is known for his goofy demeanor, slenge’an, and often acts as he pleases. Maybe that was one of the reasons why Yondu was always so hard on Peter. Plus, Peter commits various robberies with the Ravagers without being based on “noble” principles. Like Peter, T’Challa actually commits various robberies with the Ravagers.
What sets it apart is that T’Challa has the principle of “stealing from the strong to give to the weak”. This principle is more or less similar to the Robin Hood principle. When he managed to get the Power Stone, T’Challa didn’t want to sell it at all. T’Challa instead wants to use the Power Stone to light a dying star.
No wonder Yondu loves T’Challa so much because he always has a noble mission. Korath even admired T’Challa for his Robin Hood principles. Drax also idolizes T’Challa because he managed to prevent a massacre on Drax’s planet.
4. T’Challa is good at diplomacy
Thanos poses a major threat to MCU superheroes in Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019). It seems difficult for anyone to change his stance Thanos wants to maintain the balance of the universe in extreme ways. However, who would have thought Thanos had finally realized his mistake in What if?.
The way to make Thanos realize his mistake is to not use violence at all. You’d be surprised to learn Thanos repented after arguing with T’Challa. This proves that T’Challa clearly has excellent diplomatic skills, that even Thanos would listen to what he had to say.
5. T’Challa Is Good at Composing Tactics
Among all members of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Peter is arguably a character who is less skilled in strategizing because he often acts rashly. Peter even once made MCU fans nervous by thwarting another MCU superhero who killed Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War.
The opposite of Peter, T’Challa prepares a mature strategy before acting. In the What if? In the second episode, the Ravagers receive a job offer from Nebula to attack Collectors and steal Embers of Genesis. Before entering the Collector’s place, you can see a scene showing Nebula, T’Challa, and the Ravagers making tactics.
The tactics prepared by T’Challa and Nebula were even more complex. Unbeknownst to the other Ravagers, they devised a tactic that looked as if Nebula had betrayed him and handed T’Challa over to the Collector. T’Challa was even able to strategize with Yondu in the middle of his fight with the Collector.
That’s the difference between T’Challa’s version of Star-Lord and Peter Quill’s version of Star-Lord. For those who have watched What if? Second episode, who do you like? T’Challa or Peter Quill?
