Me and my health: Karen McQuillan on her lifestyle

Karen McQuillan (45) is a massage and reiki practitioner from BT9 Massage & Reiki Clinic. She offers treatments such as Swedish back massage, full body massage, Indian head massage and reiki. Her new treatments are a natural lifting facial massage, a mix of Indian head massage, Japanese massage and acupressure. She was recently trained in the MCC Method, which quickly and easily identifies and eliminates emotional, psychological and physical trauma.

Do you exercise regularly, and if so, what?

I don’t do such regular exercise, but I will practice yoga and meditation. I love nature walks and I will spend a fair amount of time walking along the beach. I will also start practicing qigong again.

What’s the worst illness you’ve ever had?

I honestly can’t remember the worst illness I’ve ever had, maybe something in childhood. I only remember having had chickenpox and mumps as a child. I’m really lucky because I get sick very rarely, even though I have a weird flu but that’s about it, really.

How healthy is your diet?

My diet is fairly balanced, and I’ve recently reduced my intake of sugar and caffeine. I rarely drink carbonated drinks and try to drink two liters of water a day. However, I love the Lindor Mint Truffle and would make it a gift.

Any bad habits?

I don’t really have a bad habit though I tend to spend too much time on my phone! However, I am a bit or a perfectionist when it comes to parking my car, I have to park perfectly in the parking lot.

Do you drink and smoke? If so, how much?

I don’t smoke but I enjoy the odd wine glass. I still have four bottles of wine in my cupboard that I got from a client after starting back at work after the last lockdown.

Are you taking any supplements?

I take Omega 3, Vitamin B12 and D3, Heavy Metal Essence and Forever Aloe Gel every morning to start my day. I’ve also recently started taking choline, cysteine, and zinc picolinate.

How do you spend your time?

I don’t really need to take time out, but I love spending time with my family and friends, going out for drives and walks in nature. I spent some amazing days at North Beach a few weeks ago and plan to spend more time there, it was amazing.

How well do you sleep?

My sleep pattern is good, and I usually sleep well throughout the night. When I woke up I would lie down on my acupressure mat then do some breathing exercises and stretches in bed in the morning before taking a shower. On odd occasions if I don’t sleep well and wake up tired, I will do some reiki on myself before I get out of bed, this gives me energy back and makes me feel well rested.

Are you worried about getting old?

I see aging as a part of life, I practice a lot of self-care and take care of myself and am always told I don’t look 45. In fact, just a few days ago I was told I look 34! I never go to bed without cleansing and moisturizing my face and I also do a natural facial massage on myself.

What are the flagship products that keep you healthy?

My go-to product that keeps me healthy is Forever Aloe Gel (available from When I run out of it, I notice how I feel tired and lethargic, and my skin doesn’t glow.

Also, I do a meditation bath in the morning, which is great for clearing my energy. I was also about to finish my shower blowing myself up with 100 seconds of cold water, this literally got the blood and energy flowing around my body and I was literally buzzing afterward, ready to start my day doing what I love, helping people relax and feel good.
