Marvel Plans for More LGBTQ Representations

Welcome to “Only for” this week Variation.”

Get ready for more LGBTQ+ representation in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So says Marvel Studio’s executive vice president of film production Victoria Alonso.

Just days after it was revealed that Loki was smooth on his Disney Plus spinoff series, I asked Alonso if that was a sign of strange things to come. “It takes time, we have so many stories we can tell,” Alonso said at the “Black Widow” fan premiere in Hollywood, adding, “We will empower those who are there. We didn’t change anything. We’re just showing the world who these people were, who these characters were… There were a lot of things we thought about that I thought would represent the world today. We won’t do it in the first film or the second film or the third film, or the first show or the second show, but we will do our best to consistently try to represent it.”

Alonso said that the decision to make Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston, the liquid is not as complicated as imagined. “I have to be honest with you, it’s not a big deal,” he said. “That’s how it fits the character. We’re not going to do it because it’s politically right or wrong. This is what it is. Don’t forget, we follow our comics. We try to follow them to the tee. So in the comics, here he is.”

I also chatted with the screenwriter of “Black Widow” Eric Pearson at a fan event. He told me he wrote the screenplay in just 11 days. “We got good bones to meet Kevin [Feige] and [co-producer] Brian Chapek and [director] Cate Shortland and talk to Scarlett [Johansson] a lot,” he said. “He called and then I locked him into a document that was like a blueprint. And once I know what I’m doing, I write quickly. …It was the first draft, but we did a lot of rewriting.”

Thomas doherty never kissed a guy on camera until he had to for his job as Max in the new “Gossip Girl.” The Scottish actor bonded with several men on the HBO Max series. “It was really interesting…Obviously my character, Max, is pansexual and for me it’s always amazing when you come into the role to see what you can draw from that and what you can compare it to in your own life, your own beliefs. ,” Doherty told me. “And it really makes me question how I was raised and been conditioned to think in terms of gender and gender identity and sexual preference stuff. That kind of throw in the air and it’s so liberating. It’s been an amazing experience for me, of course.”

Sightings: Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes breakfast with friends at Dialog Café in West Hollywood… “Queer Eye” star Antoni Porowski and his girlfriend Kevin Harrington enjoyed lunch at L’Avenue at Saks in NYC.

I stopped by the press preview Tyra Banks‘ newest venture, the Smize Cream shop at Santa Monica Place. Yes, Banks is now in the ice cream business. While he has big plans for the brand, Banks says he has no words against Ben & Jerry’s. “I bow to them,” she tells me as I sample several flavours, including Salted Sweet Cream featuring salted caramel butter and buttered toasted pecans along with caramelized pecan cookie dough balls covered in yellow sprinkles on the bottom of the cup. I’ll have more from my chat with Bank tomorrow on Variety.com.
