Kylie Cosmetics is a $1 billion business today. But when Kylie Jenner hatched the idea at 16, it wasn’t a sure bet that her beauty line would be a hit.
In a new YouTube video released on Friday, the 23-year-old siren shares how she came up with her plans, passed them on to her mother during a proper ‘meeting’, was told to use her own savings from Keeping Up With The Kardashians, worked with CCO on Lip Kit and gave knew his mother that he would be doing direct marketing for ‘his generation’.
The result: tears when the first pack sold out in minutes.

The ‘origin story’ clip was made just as the star was relaunching her lip kit with vegan ingredients.
Siren, 23, wore an oversized beige jacket with her long black hair loose for a chat held at her office in Hidden Hills, California.
Daughter Stormi ran and danced then took the pink candy from the bowl before her mother said, ‘Get out of here’ laughing and smiling. Kylie said the girl was ‘very naughty’ and seemed to admire the little one.
Then she started walking her fans through how Kylie Cosmetics came about.

“I was 17 when I launched Kylie Cosmetics,” she began. ‘It feels weird that this is my life now, looking back, makeup just became part of my DNA.’
Kendall was riding a horse while she practiced her makeup at home.
“When I was younger, I had insecurities with my lips,” she says. She became obsessed with makeup and how to make her lips bigger. She also said that that’s when she started ‘overlining’ her lips.
“I had temporary lip fillers and that was my insecurity and that’s what I wanted to do,” she said.

She said the insecurity on her lips at the age of 10 when Keeping Up With The Kardashians started to feel heavy on her youngest daughter and she was ‘buried about it.

She later said: ‘Makeup has always been a great way to express myself for me. I only know in my soul that this is what I should be doing.’

When fans started asking about her makeup, she realized that a cosmetic line might be in her future.
Kylie later said that her mother, Kris, helped her launch the company because she was a teenager. And the mother said to use her own savings to keep the business going; Kylie has savings from Keeping Up With The Kardashians. Kris said using his own money would be his ‘motivation’.

Kylie added that she had never found a lip liner and lipstick that matched and wanted to sell them together in one box to make it easier for consumers.
He met Megan Mildrew, his current CCO, who said his idea for the Lip Kit was ‘genius.’ And he’s impressed Kylie found a hole in the market.
Kris then said pick three colors he likes because it will be a hit or he should keep them in his garage.
Then Kris said Kylie didn’t want to do a marketing campaign like Kim Kardashian did for her first perfume, but instead wanted to go to social media. He said he wanted to do it ‘his way’, serving ‘his generation’.

This made Kris ‘nervous’ because he’s used to more traditional marketing and Kylie says she knows what she’s doing – she wants to communicate with her fans face-to-face.
“I’m planning a launch event to sell all these lip puppies I got,” he said. ‘At the time I thought it was so much a lip kit.’ The number reached 15,000 units.
Kylie was seen crying at the news that her kit was a huge hit and Kris hugged her.

When he went to the website to check on the sale, it wouldn’t load and he thought the site was crashing, but all 15K kits actually sold out in a matter of minutes.
