“Meeting You” is a 2020 C-drama that follows an unlikely group of friends from their final two years of high school to their university days. If you are looking for a sweet and happy drama without bad characters, disapproving parents, or unnecessary separations, then “Meeting You” is the right choice. Instead, this drama spreads positivity and inspires us to embrace people for who they are. Let’s take a closer look at six reasons that make this drama a must-watch.
Warning: minor spoilers on the drama below.
Cheerful and cheerful female lead
The female lead Xia Rui (Wan Peng) is a true social butterfly who is friendly to everyone, no matter their personality or age. Even though he did poorly in school, his forte was his liveliness as he spread positive energy wherever he appeared. He is also quite brave and very protective of his friends – hence the nickname “Big Brother Rui.” In addition, he loves coffee and has a perfect sense of taste, which later led him to pursue a career as a barista.
Actress Wan Peng has left a big impression with her debut in the 2018 hit drama “When We Were Young.” Her acting felt so natural that it was hard to believe it was her first drama, and her performance as Xia Rui in “Meeting You” was equally captivating. She is truly a rising actress to look out for!
Socially awkward genius male lead
The male lead Nan Xi (Fiction Guo) is not only an outstanding student but also a talented designer and craftsman who loves working with wood. He dreamed of becoming an architect, but he had to drop out of school because he suffered from social anxiety disorder. After his condition improved, Nan Xi’s mother sent him to a new school, where he met Xia Rui and his friends. Even though Nan Xi wanted to make friends, she was still too afraid to come into contact with people and barely spoke at all. As a result, he appears cold and distant, which makes it easy for people to misunderstand his intentions.
Fiction Guo is a familiar name to most international C-drama fans thanks to his role as Si Tu Feng in the 2018 hit drama “Accidentally in Love,” which is essentially the opposite of his character in “Meeting You.” Nonetheless, the actor convincingly portrayed the socially quiet and anxious Nan Xi as if she had never been anyone else.
OTP beautiful relationship
Nan Xi quickly discovers that Xia Rui is actually her missing friend from preschool. Back then, when Nan Xi was bullied by other children for her quiet nature, Xia Rui was the only one who approached her without prejudice and actively befriended her. Even after Xia Rui moved, Nan Xi never forgot her and was thus happy to have found her again. He mustered up his courage and told Xia Rui about it, and he was equally happy to be reunited with his former friend. They soon became good friends, and their relationship naturally turned romantic over time.
Xia Rui and Nan Xi’s beautiful relationship is guaranteed to be enviable! They treat each other as equal individuals who complement each other with their respective strengths and weaknesses. Xia Rui hugs Nan Xi for who she is – including her social anxiety – and never tries to change her. Instead, he protects her, but also supports her whenever she voluntarily takes a step outside her comfort zone. She gave him warmth and strength, which naturally made him overcome his social anxiety step by step.
Nan Xi, on the other hand, helps Xia Rui with her studies so that she can achieve her personal goals. He never looked down on himself as a poor student but instead gave him confidence by highlighting his strengths, and did all he could to support and help him achieve his dreams.
And last but not least, these two actors also have great chemistry!
One of the drama tropes I hate the most is disapproving parents forcing a couple to break up, so it was a nice surprise to see that Xia Rui and Nan Xi’s families really support their relationship. Instead of insisting that whatever they think is best for their children and the only right choice, their family (especially Nan Xi’s mother) is open-minded and observes what really makes their children happy. Nan Xi’s mother quickly realized that Xia Rui had a positive influence on her son’s social behavior, and sincerely thanked Xia Rui for being by Nan Xi’s side and making her smile.
Xia Rui’s little brother
Xia Rui’s mischievous little brother Chen Hao (Jonny Zhang) is too adorable! She is good with words, like Xia Rui, and often speaks like an adult – influenced by the dramas she likes to watch. Even though she was much younger, she didn’t hesitate to tease her older sister at every opportunity she got. It’s his way of showing affection, and it’s so cute. Chen Hao was a real scene thief who instantly brightened the mood every time he was on screen.
BONUS: Nan Xi discovered the taste of alcohol
“Meeting You” is not only super sweet but also full of a lot of humor. One of the funny scenes to watch out for is when Nan Xi tastes alcohol for the first time and can’t help but keep drinking. The reaction is golden!
