A shallow 3.4 magnitude earthquake was reported in the afternoon near Elko, Elko County, Nevada, USA.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake occurred on Wednesday June 30, 2021 at 4:13 p.m. local time at a shallow depth of 10 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt stronger than deeper ones because they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake may be revised in the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or when other agencies issue their reports.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the Center for European-Mediterranean Seismology (EMSC) listing a 3.4 magnitude earthquake as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the earthquake might be felt as a very weak shock include Carlin (pop. 2,300) which is 17 miles from the epicenter. At Elko (pop. 20,300, 29 miles away), and Spring Creek (pop. 12,400, 30 miles away), the quake may not be felt.
